FOUNDER, WELLNESS RETREAT COORDINATOR

SADIE JORDAN

In 2008, after experiencing a life threatening car accident, Sadie was forced to take a step back to focus on her health and healing. During this time, she took a very transformational trip to Costa Rica where she experienced first hand the healing power of travel and the importance of finding ones life passion. Sadie used travel to aid in overcoming the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder brought on by her car accident. While abroad, Sadie realized her life’s purpose was to use travel as a healing tool to help others dealing with depression and trauma. Since that time, she has been blessed to explore Europe, South and Central  America, and Southern Africa. One of her greatest experiences abroad was volunteering at the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Onjivarango, Namibia where she assisted with the re-release of captive cheetahs.

After spending some time contemplating how she will harness her experiences in helping others find peace and restoration through travel, Sadie purchased land in Costa Rica in 2016, with plans of building a retreat center for people healing through various forms of trauma. Sadie has experienced firsthand the healing and inspirational benefits of a transformation program and wants to aid in inspiring others! She actively works with Chanel in the development of retreats and workshop programs domestically and abroad.

Our story

Thanda Tribe was born from the collaboration of skillsets of co-founders Sadie Jordan and Chanel Durley. Five years ago, Sadie having 10 years of experience in the Travel and Tourism industry and Chanel having 10 years in the Healthcare and Wellness industries, would dream of one day offering Travel and Wellness Retreats to clients in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.

With the change in the socio-political climate, and an increase in depression and suicide rates since 2016, they both knew that creating space for people to feel safe and heard was imperative. The unfortunate suicide and deaths of female friends and family members, catapulted them to put their grief into action for social good. The ladies decided to cater their offering to women to provide them with a sense of community and support.

When deciding on a name for the Wellness retreat, Sadie was reminded of a story that resonated with her years back. “Thanda” is derived from the Zulu language and is defined as LOVE. As the story goes, the Zulu warriors were the fiercest of warriors, protective of their people and their land. Despite their fierceness, they were also known to be the kindest people always putting others above themselves and fostering love within their community. It reminded Sadie and Chanel of the beauty of women and their synergistic qualities of being strong and soft at the same time.

Thanda was also the name of a loving and well-known Elephant Sadie was blessed to meet when she visited a Elephant Sanctuary in South Africa.  In addition, Chanel has always had a special connection to elephants especially to the Hindu Deity Ganesh who is known as the Remover of Obstacles. It was kismet for both ladies to incorporate the name, characteristics and symbolism into their company.

Thanda Tribe is love. It is the mirror reflection that reminds you that you are whole, loved, and perfect. Thanda Tribe holds space to remind you of your light in this world, and supports you as you go out and share it with your community.
